Memory as an Ecosystem
Returning to places, returning to images.
I now travel in a way that brings me back to the same places, the same coordinates. I did a lot of exploring and traveling in my twenties while doing research for documentary film projects and working with other creatives. This included stunningly remote places in rural Alaska, Bali, Bhutan, India, Mexico, Nepal, Tasmania, the Hopi mesas, and more.
I like the way I travel now — where I return to a place, observe changes, feel or examine how the climate has been altered (alarmingly so), and think about what I am doing in each place, what local species (beyond myself) might be currently adapting to or enduring.
Memory is its own sort of ecosystem. Recollections are diverse and varied, but resilient threads prevail and connect the dots in unexpected ways. Past images or documentation serve as a reminder of how we felt then, how we feel now, and how we might choose to fashion future stories.
More on this during the fall as I continue to explore ideas / visuals related to fashion(ing), plots, and most importantly biodiversity in dialogue with the archiving and preservation of our shared terrain.
